A 24-year-old Vermont man has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of a three-year old boy who was visiting the store.
Vermont Police Department Capt. Michael Osterberg said Wednesday the man has an extensive criminal history including burglary, assault and theft.
Osterberg says investigators believe the attack occurred Tuesday at a Vermont Walmart, located in the 700 block of West Pomeroy Road.
They say the victim was stabbed at least five times.
The man faces charges of first-degree murder and first-and-second-degree assault, according to a news release from the Vermont Police.
He is being held at the Riverside County Jail.
Police say they were called to the Walmart shortly before 3 p.m.
Tuesday after a complaint of a person suffering from injuries.
The man was taken to Mercy Hospital in Burlington.
Vermon Police Chief Michael Rocha said the suspect was not wearing a mask at the time of the attack.
Police believe the victim may have been attacked by a second person who was in the store, and that the man was injured before the suspect left.
Rocha did not release the identity of the second suspect, saying he is still at large.
